Celebrating the Prague Lady Teachers Choir Visit 3rd to 7th July 2013

[col2]

Following the huge success of the visit of the Kelsborrow Choir to Prague in 2012, the members of Kelsborrow Choir were absolutely delighted to reciprocate the hospitality by hosting a visit of the Prague Lady Teachers Choir (PSPU) to Cheshire at the beginning of July.

Over a glorious five days – yes at last we had a British Summer to be really proud of – Kelsborrow Choir members received the ladies of the PSPU into their homes and shared their exploration of Cheshire and North Wales. On Friday 5th July, a sunny day trip to Llandudno, calling in at Betws-Y-Coed on the way back, culminated in a three-choir concert in St Mary’s Parish Church, Mold.  Within such a beautiful setting and in front of an appreciative audience (attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Mold), three choirs – the Llwynegrin Singers, Kelsborrow Choir and the PSPU, presented an entertaining variety of religious, folk, and light entertainment choral works in the three languages.

On Saturday morning the PSPU choir was warmly welcomed to Chester Town Hall by The Right Worshipful The Lord Mayor of Chester and Chairman of Cheshire West and Chester Council, Cllr Jill Houlbrook. After introductions: coffee, cakes and many photographs, the choir was treated to a guided tour of the Mayor’s chambers and concluded their visit by treating many Chester passing visitors and tourists to a spontaneous rendering of part of their Czech and English language repertoire on the Town Hall steps.

On the Saturday evening a joint concert was presented in St Andrew’s Church Tarvin.  Inside the beautiful parish church and in front of a packed audience, (including our special guest, The Lord Mayor of Chester and her Consort), Kelsborrow Choir and the Ladies from the PSPU each presented works from their respective musical collections, culminating in a joint rendering of A World in Union. It was a musically diverse and entertaining evening.  Following the concert the two choirs, joined by members of the audience, attended a splendid social event – a Hog Roast – at Tarvin Community Centre. It was a wonderful opportunity to circulate and socialise with our guests and a chance to say farewell, for on the following day we sadly had to wave our guests off at Manchester.

Members of every Choir who congregate and sing together, do so for a wide range of social, cultural, and of course musical reasons.  To be able to experience all of these three emotions whilst at the same time sharing those experiences with visitors from a foreign country is surely a pinnacle to their musical aspirations?

Howard Goodall at Fauls 020 (Copy)

Howard Goodall is pictured here with our Secretary – Alan Hibbert,

Howard Goodall, the well known composer who currently has his series “The History of Music” on BBC 2, visited the local mixed choir, Fauls Singers, at their rehearsal on Wednesday.  Howard has come together with Cancer Research UK to write a new piece of music for the charity which will be titled “More Tomorrows”. He is touring the country interviewing cancer survivors to get a feel of what it is like to be diagnosed with cancer so that he can get the right atmosphere in his new piece of music.  To this end he interviewed choir member Alan Hibbert and discussed his experience of being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2009. The interview was filmed by Classic FM and it will be posted on their website in due course.

The choir was delighted to welcome Howard and sang some pieces for him including his own composition “The Lord is my Shepherd” which is the theme song for the TV series “the Vicar of Dibley”.
